Barberio Narrowly Re-Elected as Mayor Democrats Capture Both Council Seats

Parsippany, NJLocal News

Mayor James R. Barberio narrowly won re-election in Parsippany-Troy Hills, receiving 9,542 votes (50. 39%) against Democratic challenger Pulkit Desai, who earned 9,333 votes (49. 29%). The tight mayoral race underscores the increasing competitiveness of local elections.

Meanwhile, Democrats captured both Town Council seats, with Matt Kavanagh and Diya Patel leading the race, marking a historic shift in the council's makeup to 2 Republicans and 3 Democrats. This is the first time since the 1970s that the council has not been entirely Republican. Voter turnout in Morris County was reported at 57. 41%, with 221,126 ballots cast out of 385,139 registered voters. The unofficial results include early voting and pre-poll mail-in ballots, while additional counts are still pending.

As the council prepares to convene, the new dynamics could lead to significant policy changes in the township. Election officials will certify the results once all ballots are accounted for.
