Born in 1923 in Canfield, Ohio, she pursued her passion for education by teaching English and history. After marrying Andy Crooks, a forester, they relocated to Olympia for better educational opportunities for their children. Arleen's community involvement included founding Meals on Wheels and serving on various boards, including the Senior Center Board and Election Board. She also taught English to Southeast Asian refugees, demonstrating her commitment to helping others.

Arleen was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as an elder. Her dedication to local charities and education left a lasting legacy in Olympia. Her story reflects the importance of community service and support for families.
