Kim Doughty, principal of Peter G. Schmidt Elementary, has earned the recognition of 2026 Washington State Elementary Principal of the Year for her outstanding leadership. Tumwater School District Superintendent Kevin Bogatin highlighted her commitment to making every child feel valued. After spending 18 years as a teacher, Doughty sought a leadership role to widen her influence across the school community. Her initiatives include a Multi-Tiered System of Support that addresses academic and behavioral needs, and a student leadership council that enhances student voice.

The school has also created supportive partnerships, such as the "Sailing Into Summer" event, which promotes literacy and provides resources to families. Doughty's leadership emphasizes belonging and equity, ensuring that every decision made centers around student success. She cherishes her role, stating, “Every day, I get to work alongside passionate educators. ” Doughty's journey from student to principal at the school she once attended reflects her deep commitment to education and community.
