Hot, dry weather conditions launch earlier start to WA wildfire season

Olympia, WALocal News

Washington's wildfire season commenced early this year, driven by extremely dry conditions that heighten fire risks. Ryan Rodruck, wildfire communications manager for the DNR, highlighted that human actions are responsible for approximately 90% of wildfires in the state. He warned that activities like unattended campfires and fireworks can easily ignite fires in the current drought conditions. Although budget cuts have halved funding for wildfire prevention, the DNR asserts it is prepared to tackle the challenges of this season. Fire officials urge the public to exercise caution and remove dry vegetation around properties to create defensible spaces.

Governor Bob Ferguson's recent budget cuts have raised concerns about wildfire readiness. Rodruck emphasized that maintaining vigilance is crucial as the season progresses. The DNR calls for community cooperation to keep sparks off the landscape during this hot and dry period.
