WA Gov. Ferguson to sign reckless speeding bill

Olympia, WALocal News

On May 12, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson will sign the BEAM Act, a significant piece of legislation aimed at curbing reckless speeding. The law mandates the use of intelligent speed assistance devices in vehicles driven by individuals whose licenses have been suspended for reckless or excessive speeding. This initiative follows a devastating 2024 crash in Renton that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a mother and her children. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mari Leavitt, seeks to hold dangerous drivers accountable and prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, fatal crashes involving speeding surged by nearly 40% from 2019 to 2023, with excessive speed contributing to 251 deaths in 2023 alone. Family members of those lost in the crash will attend the public signing, emphasizing the bill's personal significance. The BEAM Act positions Washington as a potential leader in implementing speed-limiting technology for specific offenders. This legislation aims to address one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in the state and honor the memories of those lost.
