North Thurston High School students excelled at the SkillsUSA State Competition from March 27-29, 2025, in Lakewood, where Rudy Larson won first place in cabinetmaking. David Perez and Emma Wall earned second and third places, respectively, highlighting the school's strong performance in this event. SkillsUSA, which supports over 413,000 students, focuses on developing hands-on skills and career readiness. Matt Newton, the school's drafting and woodworking teacher, guides students through competitions via an after-school SkillsUSA club. Emma Wall reflected on her positive experience, stating that the competition felt like a "free trial" into carpentry.

David Perez emphasized the value of competing against skilled peers and the importance of Newton's guidance. Larson's first-place win qualifies him for the national competition in Atlanta, a notable achievement for the school. This marks the first time North Thurston will send a student to nationals in cabinetmaking, underscoring the program's success.
