Olympia Regional Learning Academy Plants Moon Tree
The Olympia Regional Learning Academy proudly planted a Moon Tree, a coastal Douglas fir, during a ceremony on February 27, 2025. This tree is particularly special as it is grown from seeds that orbited the Moon during NASA's Apollo 14 mission in the 1970s. The initiative reflects the academy's dedication to integrating science education with environmental stewardship. During the ceremony, Montessori teacher Kyrain MacMichael shared the historical significance of the Moon Trees, noting how seeds were taken into space by astronaut Stuart Roosa. The school was also selected to host a seedling from the Artemis I mission, which aims to explore deep space and engage students in STEM learning.
Conor Schober, the director of communications for the Olympia School District, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in inspiring the next generation. The event not only fosters a connection between students and space exploration but also emphasizes the importance of ecological awareness. Overall, the Moon Tree planting serves as a symbol of innovation, education, and environmental responsibility within the community.
