WA leaders criticize Trump, tell him to 'follow the damn law'
Washington state leaders, including Governor Bob Ferguson, held a press conference to express their disapproval of President Trump's recent actions, which they argue are misaligned with the state's values. The president's decision to freeze $162 million in federal funds has raised alarms, particularly concerning the impact on essential programs like "solar for all" and pollution reduction efforts. Ferguson highlighted that the state received approximately $27 billion in federal funding last fiscal year, underscoring the significance of these funds to the state budget. The Washington State Department of Commerce Director, Joe Nguyen, labeled the funding freeze and related trade threats as a "direct attack" on the state's economy, particularly affecting rural communities and families. Additionally, officials reiterated their commitment to protecting immigrants and the LGBTQ community, emphasizing that state laws remain robust despite federal actions.
Attorney General Nick Brown stated that they will continue to assess and challenge the president’s actions as necessary. Ferguson stressed that Washington will not allow federal policies to hinder their progress in advancing clean energy and social justice initiatives. The governor also addressed criticisms regarding his focus on federal issues, asserting that Washingtonians expect their leaders to stand up for their values.
