Port of Olympia Continues Sediment Sampling in Budd Inlet and Will Hold Public Observation Event in March

Olympia, WALocal News

The Port of Olympia is undertaking sediment sampling in Budd Inlet to address legacy pollutants, with a particular focus on the West Bay area. This initiative builds on a prior sampling project in East Bay, where over 1,100 sediment samples were collected and are currently being analyzed under the State of Washington’s Model Toxics Control Act. Sampling efforts this winter will include both surface “grab” samples and depth “Vibracore” samples, extending to depths of 20 feet to gain comprehensive insights into contamination levels. A Public Observation Day is scheduled for March 4, allowing Evergreen State College students and members of the public to witness the sampling process and interact with Port staff. Environmental Manager Jonathon Wolf highlighted the significance of community engagement and transparency in the cleanup efforts.

The overarching goal of the Budd Inlet Cleanup is to restore environmental health, benefiting aquatic ecosystems and the local community. Results from the East Bay sampling are anticipated by spring 2025, while the West Bay sampling will inform future cleanup plans. Community members are encouraged to visit the Port of Olympia website for more information and updates on this important environmental initiative.
