Thurston County finalizes 14.3 million building purchase for new sheriff station

Thurston County has finalized the purchase of a new building for the Sheriff’s Office, investing $14. 25 million in a 56,000-square-foot facility situated at 1111 Israel Road SW. This decision, supported by the community's approval of the Public Safety Sales Tax in November 2023, reflects the county's commitment to enhancing public safety infrastructure. Sheriff Derek Sanders highlighted that consolidating operations in one location will facilitate better information sharing and quicker response times, crucial for effective policing. In addition to the purchase price, the county plans to allocate $4 million for renovations and $1.

75 million for a vehicle impound facility, potentially including an outdoor shooting range, bringing the total cost to nearly $20 million. The building is expected to be fully owned by the county shortly, with renovations slated for completion by June and construction starting in August. As Thurston County's population continues to grow, this new facility will help meet the increasing demand for public safety services. The Sheriff’s Office aims to relocate to the new headquarters by spring 2026, demonstrating a proactive approach to community safety and resource management.
