Forest Service Offers Fee-Free Day in Honor of MLK National Day of Service

Olympia, WALocal News

The USDA Forest Service is set to waive recreation fees at various day-use sites in Oregon and Washington on January 20, 2025, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to national forests and encourage community engagement with nature, allowing more people to experience the recreational opportunities available on public lands. The fee-free day is part of a broader commitment to promote volunteer service and honor Dr. King’s legacy through environmental stewardship.

Tracy Calizon, Assistant Director of Recreation, Lands, and Minerals, emphasized the importance of connecting with nature on this significant day of reflection and service. The fee waiver will apply to picnic areas, most boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers that are open for the season, while fees for camping, cabin rentals, and other permits will continue to be in effect. This event marks the first of five fee-free days in 2025, with additional dates including National Get Outdoors Day and Veterans Day. Visitors are encouraged to check local forest websites for specific site information and adhere to Leave No Trace principles. Together, these efforts aim to preserve the natural beauty of national forests for future generations.
