Permit denied for south Thurston County event center. Owner says he will appeal decision

Olympia, WALocal News

Hillside Farms, an event center situated in south Thurston County, encountered another setback when the Thurston County Hearings Examiner denied its special use permit application. This decision was influenced by longstanding complaints from local residents about excessive noise during events, which have reportedly disrupted the peaceful residential environment. Owner Paul Wendler announced plans to appeal the ruling while continuing to operate the center without final building permit approval. The special use permit application aimed to formalize the venue’s ability to host weddings, birthdays, and other gatherings, alongside the operation of a farm store selling lavender products. Residents have voiced their concerns in public hearings and through written correspondence, with some describing the noise as overwhelming and detrimental to their well-being.

Wendler, however, contends that he has complied with county regulations and disputes claims of confrontational behavior. The Hearings Examiner highlighted zoning inconsistencies, stating that the proposed use would detract from the intended residential character of the area. With the appeal process open, Wendler faces a tight timeline to file within the stipulated periods.
