Lacey City Council Reconsiders Metropolitan Parks District Proposal

Olympia, WALocal News

The Lacey City Council is once again examining the creation of a Metropolitan Parks District, an initiative that voters previously rejected in 2018. The Parks Improvement Funding Workgroup has proposed a 45-cent property tax levy per $1,000 of assessed value, which could raise approximately $5. 9 million annually for the city’s parks. For example, a homeowner with an assessed property value of $500,000 would pay $225 a year. Most council members appear supportive, particularly Michael Steadman, who highlights the economic benefits of investing in parks.

However, Council member Lenny Greenstein has raised concerns about the need for more details on fund allocation and the potential use of lodging tax revenue. Mayor Andy Ryder suggested considering a lower initial levy rate to gauge public support. The council is aware of the public's response, especially given the current economic climate and recent voter fatigue from multiple tax proposals. A work session is scheduled for January 14 to continue discussions on the proposed parks district.
