Lacey City Council Awards $670,000 Contract for Nighttime Manhole Repairs

Olympia, WALocal News

The Lacey City Council has awarded a contract to Western United Civil Group for the repair of 17 sewer manholes at a cost of approximately $670,000. This project includes repairs to three manholes near the Homann Drive roundabout and 14 others on Martin Way East and Desmond Drive. Scheduled to begin in February and last about 40 days, the work will be conducted at night to minimize disruptions to traffic and local businesses. Utility engineer Jason Kashani emphasized the critical nature of the repairs, which will seal leaks, cracks, and address corrosion while extending the lifespan of the manholes with a polyurethane coating. During the council meeting, member Nic Dunning expressed concern over the significant difference between the engineer's estimate of $475,000 and the winning bid, which is attributed to the complexities of the repairs and the requirement for night work.

Kashani reassured the council that thorough inspections are conducted before bidding, contributing to the final cost. These repairs are essential for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the city's sewer system, reflecting Lacey's commitment to investing in its infrastructure for the benefit of residents.
