Thurston County ballot center to be remodeled, expanded by summer, Auditor says

Olympia, WALocal News

Thurston County is set to remodel and expand its ballot processing center in Tumwater with a budget of approximately $3 million, aiming for completion by mid-summer 2024. The center, which has served the county for decades, urgently needs additional space and enhanced security features, as highlighted by County Auditor Mary Hall. The Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the construction contract, funded by the Public Safety Sales Tax revenue from the 2023 general election, specifically designed to support election security infrastructure. Previously, the county focused on establishing a new voter services center, which successfully opened in time for the August primary election. With that center now operational, attention has turned back to the ballot processing facility to ensure it meets the needs of upcoming elections.

Hall stated that the improvements will enhance security and efficiency while promoting transparency, allowing observers to monitor the process more effectively. Construction is anticipated to conclude by summer, ensuring the facility is ready for the crucial August primary election.
