Washington’s voter-approved natural gas measure snared in two lawsuits

Olympia, WALocal News

Washington state is facing legal challenges to Initiative 2066, which aims to halt the phase-out of natural gas in residential settings. Opponents, including environmental organizations and local governments, argue the initiative is unconstitutional for being overly broad and lacking clarity in its amendments to existing laws. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has voiced concerns about the potential risks to public health and safety regulations. Conversely, the Building Industry Association of Washington maintains that the initiative is now law following a narrow voter approval and is seeking compliance from state building regulators. The initiative seeks to reverse recent energy code changes that promote electric heat pumps over natural gas.

Critics also allege that the measure misled voters by presenting a singular focus on natural gas while encompassing broader issues. Legal proceedings are set for early 2025, with significant implications for Washington's energy policy.
