Thurston County ballot center to be remodeled, expanded by summer, Auditor says

Olympia, WALocal News

Thurston County is investing approximately $3 million to remodel and expand its ballot processing center in Tumwater, with completion expected by summer 2024. The facility, which has served the county for decades, is in urgent need of upgrades to enhance space and security, according to Auditor Mary Hall. Funding will come from a Public Safety Sales Tax approved by voters in the 2023 general election, which allocates a portion for election security infrastructure. The planned expansion aims to provide additional space for ballot inspectors and improve the handling of damaged ballots, which currently require a lengthy manual duplication process. The revamped facility will also foster greater transparency by allowing observers to monitor ballot processing without needing an escort, thanks to a glass division.

Hall noted her admiration for more advanced facilities in other counties, indicating a commitment to elevating Thurston County's election processing capabilities. This remodel is timely given upcoming elections and addresses critical issues of security and efficiency, reflecting a proactive approach to enhancing the electoral process in Thurston County.
