It’s illegal to leave your car warming up unattended in WA | The Olympian

Olympia, WALocal News

With winter's arrival in Washington state, discussions about the legality of leaving vehicles running unattended to warm up have intensified. The Revised Code of Washington mandates that drivers must take certain precautions, including stopping the engine and locking the ignition, before leaving their vehicles. Failure to comply can result in infraction notices, which may include warnings or fines. This is especially pertinent given the 53,187 motor vehicle thefts reported in 2023, highlighting vehicle security as a major concern for residents. Local law enforcement strongly advises against leaving vehicles unattended, even on private property, to reduce the risk of theft.

While some states have modified their laws to accommodate remote start systems, Washington has not yet made such changes. Therefore, individuals using remote start features should remain vigilant, as these vehicles are still technically considered unattended. It is vital for Washington drivers to be aware of both the legal implications and safety concerns related to warming up their cars in cold weather.
