Traveling for the holidays? REAL ID deadline is approaching, here are five things to know

Olympia, WALocal News

Washington state residents are reminded of the upcoming REAL ID deadline, which requires a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card for boarding commercial flights starting May 7, 2025. The Washington State Department of Licensing outlines five key points regarding the enhanced driver’s license (EDL) and enhanced ID card (EID). First-time applicants must apply in person at designated DOL offices, while renewals can be completed online. Washington is unique in that having a REAL ID-compliant ID is optional; residents can use alternative forms of identification such as U. S.

passports or military IDs. EDLs are particularly beneficial for land or sea travel to Canada and Mexico, allowing for travel without a passport. Processing times for EDLs and EIDs may take up to three weeks, so residents are advised to apply early to avoid delays as the deadline approaches. Understanding these requirements is essential for smooth travel during the busy holiday season.
