Olympia police plan to add 12 EVs to fleet, express woes with current hybrid models

Olympia, WALocal News

The Olympia Police Department is seeking approval to lease 12 new electric vehicles, funded through the county's Public Safety Tax. This proposal will be discussed at the Olympia City Council meeting on December 10. Deputy Police Chief Shelby Parker highlighted that the request addresses significant operational challenges faced by the current fleet of hybrid vehicles, which have reliability issues. The new electric vehicles are expected to enhance efficiency and support the city's goal of reducing emissions by 59% by 2030. Currently, 38% of the city’s light-duty vehicles are electric or hybrid, with a goal for full transition by 2034.

This initiative aligns with broader environmental objectives, including transitioning heavy-duty vehicles to renewable diesel. Leasing these vehicles will lower upfront costs and save the city approximately $1. 1 million in the long term, reflecting a trend among local law enforcement to adopt greener technologies while meeting operational needs.
