Costco wants to open new store in Tumwater, city information shows | The Olympian

Olympia, WALocal News

Costco is actively pursuing plans to establish a new store in Tumwater, located at the southwest corner of Tumwater Boulevard and Interstate 5, replacing the existing store on Littlerock Road. The proposed facility will measure 160,000 square feet and feature a gas station with 40 fueling positions and 950 parking spaces, addressing community needs. This new store is part of a broader mixed-use development plan spanning 57 acres, which aims to introduce additional retail businesses and multi-family housing to the area. Mike Matlock, the city's community development director, noted that Costco's interest in expanding is driven by the potential for greater profitability with a larger store. The current Costco, opened in the early 1990s, occupies about 143,000 square feet.

A meeting with Tumwater's development review committee is scheduled to gather feedback on this proposal before it progresses to public comment stages. With a distribution center already in Tumwater, the proposed store underscores Costco's significance to the local economy, and the community will be closely monitoring developments.
