New affordable housing project planned in west Olympia. Thurston County contributes $1M

Olympia, WALocal News

The Family Support Center of South Sound (FSCSS) has recently celebrated the opening of The Landing, a 62-unit apartment building in west Olympia, which enhances the local affordable housing options. Thurston County has further committed to this cause with a $1 million grant aimed at purchasing three acres for a new affordable housing development. This funding is crucial for providing permanent supportive housing for vulnerable families and survivors of domestic violence. Executive Director Trish Gregory expressed deep gratitude for the county's support and highlighted the potential for creating intergenerational communities through partnerships with senior service organizations. Although construction of the new building is expected to take around eight years, FSCSS plans to convert four existing units on the property into temporary supportive rental housing, addressing immediate housing needs while paving the way for future developments.

The unanimous approval of the funding by the Board of County Commissioners underscores the commitment to affordable housing in the region, demonstrating a proactive approach to combating homelessness and ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to safe living environments.
