On December 5, 2024, a significant 7. 0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast near Eureka, California, leading to tsunami warnings along the West Coast. Initially recorded at 7. 3, the quake's magnitude was later revised down. The tsunami warning extended from Santa Cruz to Florence, Oregon, but was canceled by NOAA by 11:54 AM after no destructive tsunami was observed.

Tremors were felt as far away as Reno, Nevada, highlighting the quake's extensive impact. NOAA issued its first alert shortly after the quake, and while advisories were sent to Hawaii and other Pacific islands, they were confirmed safe from tsunami threats. Officials urged the public to refrain from returning to hazard zones until safety was assured, emphasizing the importance of preparedness during seismic events.
