New affordable housing project planned in west Olympia. Thurston County contributes $1M

Olympia, WALocal News

The Family Support Center of South Sound (FSCSS) recently held a grand opening for its new 62-unit apartment building, The Landing, in west Olympia, underscoring its commitment to affordable housing. Thurston County has granted FSCSS $1 million to assist in acquiring three acres of land for future development. This funding will enable the construction of a new building with approximately 60 affordable housing units aimed at families, survivors of domestic violence, and vulnerable seniors. Executive Director Trish Gregory expressed gratitude for the county's support, highlighting the urgent need for permanent supportive housing in the area. While construction is expected to start in about eight years, FSCSS plans to repurpose four existing units into supportive rental housing for families and survivors of domestic violence as an interim solution.

The project aims to create an intergenerational community by potentially collaborating with organizations focused on senior support. This development addresses immediate housing needs while cultivating long-term solutions for vulnerable populations in the Olympia area. The funding is part of the county’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) fiscal recovery funds, showcasing a proactive approach to tackling housing challenges.
