Olympia, WALocal News

Evergreen State College will launch a host family program for international students in spring 2026, as part of its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. The initiative seeks to alleviate financial barriers for students, who often face high living costs. Local families are encouraged to participate by hosting students for short weekends or longer terms, provided they have a private bedroom available. Participants will receive $700 per month for housing and $500 for food, while not responsible for student transportation. International students at Evergreen come from diverse countries, contributing to the local economy by generating jobs and supporting various sectors.

The college aims to enhance cultural exchange and community engagement through this program. Rui Zhao, an international student specialist, emphasizes the importance of fostering communication across cultures. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the positive impacts international students have on the Thurston County community.
