Jerry Miller, a revered teacher and coach in Olympia, passed away on August 30, 2025, at the age of 76 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He taught at Jefferson Middle School and served as the head coach for Capital High School's track and cross-country teams for over 40 years. Miller's influence extended beyond the classroom, as he founded and supported numerous local running organizations, helping to foster community and teamwork. A memorial gathering held on October 4, 2025, during the American Parkinson Disease Association’s South Sound Optimism Walk, raised funds for Parkinson's research, underscoring his enduring legacy. Former students and athletes, including Jennifer Gillick and Ronan Piper, praised Miller for his kindness and commitment to their personal growth.
His coaching achievements include leading 26 teams to state meets and winning a state title in 1997. Miller's impact on his students and athletes demonstrated his dedication to their success both on and off the track. He was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2015, marking a significant recognition of his contributions to high school athletics.
