Saint Martins University Partners with Yakima Valley College to Train Special Education Teachers

Olympia, WALocal News

Saint Martin’s University and Yakima Valley College have formed a partnership to combat the severe shortage of special education teachers in Washington. Starting in summer 2026, graduates from Yakima Valley College’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Teacher Education program can enroll in a discounted online Master of Education in Inclusive Education at Saint Martin’s University. Dr. Jeremy Delamarter highlights that this collaboration benefits the institutions and local schools, which are struggling to fill critical special education positions. The program targets both recent graduates and existing educators, allowing them to obtain special education endorsements while working in their communities.

This initiative aims to create a seamless transition from Yakima Valley College to Saint Martin’s, addressing the local demand for qualified teaching professionals. Delamarter noted that the special education programs at Saint Martin’s are uniquely integrated into general education curricula, preparing students to meet diverse learning needs. The partnership also emphasizes the importance of resource sharing among smaller institutions to better serve student populations. Ongoing discussions are in place to establish additional pathways with other local schools.
