Olympia History Swimming at Capitol Lake Park
Capitol Lake Park in Olympia dedicated its public swimming area on June 14, 1964, after a bond measure approved by 75% of voters. The park's swimming area featured a lifeguard-manned dock and various sections for children and competitive swimmers. It quickly became a beloved local spot, with free swim classes and a snack bar offering diverse food options. Despite its popularity, the health department began closing the swimming area in the 1970s due to high levels of fecal coliform bacteria and algae blooms. Lifeguards reported that water conditions deteriorated, making it unsafe to swim.
The park officially closed to swimming in 1985, marking the end of an era in Olympia's recreational history. This closure highlighted the tension between community recreation and environmental health. Today, Capitol Lake Park stands as a reminder of the city's efforts to balance development and sustainability.
