Check Out Olympias Largest Trees
Restoring Earth Connection has completed its Tree Ambassador Project, which identified the largest trees in Olympia, crucial for their environmental benefits. The project, funded by a City of Olympia Inspire Grant, involved measuring and cataloging 1,521 trees over five months. Lynn Fitz-Hugh, the executive director, emphasized the importance of these trees for carbon drawdown and stormwater management. The largest tree is a giant sequoia with a circumference of 31 feet, 11 inches, while the second-largest consists of four coastal redwoods that share a base, measuring 30 feet. The project visited around 1,000 homes to gather data, reflecting a significant community effort to engage local residents in environmental stewardship.
Results will be made available on the organization's website, and updates will occur as new information about larger trees emerges. A map of these notable trees will soon be released, inviting the community to explore their local natural heritage. The initiative highlights the importance of preserving and recognizing the ecological value of urban trees.
