South Sound Parent to Parent Invites Community to Join Them in Recognizing Disability Pride Month in July

Olympia, WALocal News

South Sound Parent to Parent (SSP2P) will celebrate Disability Pride Month this July, marking its 10-year anniversary nationally. Founded in 1987, SSP2P supports families of children with disabilities and offers early intervention services in several Washington counties. Executive Director Kim Smith highlights the necessity of accommodations for individuals with disabilities, stating, “They just need accommodations to access. ” The month promotes awareness and inclusion while challenging societal stigma, particularly as vital federal programs like Medicaid face potential cuts. Smith notes that Disability Pride Month encourages representation and visibility, stating, “Accessibility is key, and it benefits the whole community.

” Approximately 21% of Washington’s children under age 18 have special health care needs, emphasizing the critical nature of support and advocacy. SSP2P invites community members to join in local celebrations, including a street dance. The organization’s efforts underscore the importance of fostering an inclusive environment for all.
