Thousands in WA at risk of losing food benefits under GOP bill in Congress

Lynnwood, WALocal News

A GOP bill passed by the U. S. House threatens food assistance for tens of thousands of low-income Washington residents. The legislation proposes stricter work requirements that could eliminate benefits for 79,000 individuals and reduce them for an additional 149,000. The state’s Department of Social and Health Services estimates that over 900,000 people could see their benefits reduced or eliminated if the bill is enacted.

The cuts would predominantly affect children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities, with an average monthly SNAP benefit reduction of $55. 95 per household. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this proposal represents the largest cut in SNAP history, with a projected nationwide reduction of $300 billion. Starting in 2028, states would be required to pay 5% of SNAP benefits, shifting more costs to them. Capestany warned that these cuts would negatively impact Washington's economy, potentially decreasing business revenue by approximately $360 million annually.

The bill now awaits Senate approval before reaching President Trump’s desk.
