These Washington laws take effect July 1

Lynnwood, WALocal News

Washington state is set to enact new laws on July 1, including a 38% increase in hunting and fishing license fees and a 6-cent hike in the gas tax. The fee increase, part of Senate Bill 5583, is anticipated to raise $19. 6 million over two years, despite an expected 11% drop in sales. The gas tax increase aligns with the start of the state’s fiscal year, adding to the financial burden on residents. Additionally, Senate Bill 5104 will protect immigrant workers from coercive practices by employers, allowing them to file complaints with the Department of Labor and Industries.

Stricter regulations for gun dealers will also be implemented, requiring enhanced security measures and background checks for employees. These measures come in response to a significant budget shortfall projected to be between $12 billion and $16 billion over the next four years. The legislation passed with narrow margins, reflecting a contentious political climate. Advocates and opponents continue to debate the impact of these changes on low-income residents and businesses.
