Pomas Fire grows to 362 acres in Glacier Peak Wilderness

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Pomas Fire has grown to 362 acres in Glacier Peak Wilderness, first detected on June 13. Rapid response by the U. S. Forest Service included smokejumpers and aerial support to contain the fire, especially near the Entiat River. Ground crews focused on preventing further spread toward Myrtle Lake but faced challenges from winds that intensified the fire's activity.

The blaze, fueled by dead timber from the 2015 Wolverine Fire, is complicated by steep terrain. Although lightning is suspected to have caused the fire, no recent strikes have occurred in the area. The Forest Service has closed public access to several trails for safety. District Ranger Holly Krake emphasized the need for early intervention to avoid greater threats later in the summer. The fire's management is critical as officials prepare for a potentially severe wildfire season.
