WA State issues outdoor burn safety guidelines as summer approaches

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Washington State Fire Marshal's Office released safety guidelines for outdoor burning as the summer season approaches, stressing the importance of caution due to heightened fire risks. In 2024, state fire agencies reported 2,652 fire incidents in outdoor areas, underscoring the urgency of fire safety measures. Deputy State Fire Marshal Courtney Chambers stated that residents must regularly check for burn bans and adhere to safety protocols. Recommendations include positioning fire pits at least 10 feet from homes and campfires at least 25 feet from tents. Additional precautions involve cleaning grills to prevent grease fires, keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, and ensuring fires are fully extinguished before leaving.

The Fire Marshal's Office directs residents to the Washington Department of Natural Resources Burn Portal for the latest information on fire restrictions. These guidelines serve to protect communities as outdoor recreational activities increase during the summer months. Implementing these measures is crucial to preventing accidental fires and safeguarding properties.
