Last week, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed three bills designed to strengthen immigrant rights amid federal crackdowns on undocumented individuals. House Bill 1232 authorizes state health officials to inspect private detention facilities, including the Tacoma center, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Senate Bill 5104 provides the Department of Labor and Industries with the authority to investigate workplace coercion faced by immigrant workers, ensuring their complaints are handled confidentially. Senate Bill 5714 expands the definition of unprofessional conduct for bail bond agents, preventing them from enforcing immigration laws. These measures reflect the state's commitment to transparency and accountability in immigration enforcement.

The bills will take effect immediately or on July 1 and July 27, respectively. The legislation responds to growing concerns about the treatment of immigrants in detention and the workplace. Lawmakers emphasize the importance of safeguarding immigrant rights in a challenging political climate.
