Leavenworth residents join nationwide May Day Strong protest

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Leavenworth residents gathered on May 1 for the “May Day Strong” protest, part of a larger national movement opposing the Trump Administration's perceived attacks on workers' rights. Approximately 100 attendees rallied to demand the repeal of emergency presidential declarations and increased support for public education and immigrant protections. Co-organizer Judy Derpack emphasized the protest's role in fostering community and action among like-minded individuals. Washington State Speaker Laurie Jinkins attended the rally, noting the increasing size of protests statewide as citizens voice their concerns to Congress. The grassroots group NCW United, with about 1,000 members on Facebook, organized the event and aims to continue weekly protests.

This rally followed other local protests, including the Presidents Day event in February and an April 5 rally, showcasing a sustained commitment to activism in the region. The group’s efforts reflect a growing movement against the policies of the Trump Administration, particularly among local families concerned about the future. NCW United plans to align its actions with the national protest movement 50501, aiming to challenge anti-democratic actions and advocate for workers' rights.
