Leavenworth, WALocal News

On March 19, 2025, the Upper Valley Quilts of Valor chapter presented its first quilt to retired U. S. Air Force Major Fred Shannon during a heartfelt ceremony at the Chumstick Grange Hall. Founded by Carol Cade and Brenda Reagan, the chapter aims to honor veterans affected by war through comforting quilts. Cade, the group's leader, shared her motivation rooted in family military history, expressing gratitude for Shannon's service during the Vietnam War.

Retired U. S. Air Force Gen. Mike Worden highlighted the courage required for the Wild Weasel missions, which Shannon undertook as an Electronic Warfare Officer. These missions involved intentionally provoking enemy radar to expose surface-to-air missile sites, a tactic that was revolutionary at the time.

Shannon's leadership was pivotal during a significant airstrike against the heavily defended Paul Doumer Bridge, where he and his pilot suppressed missile sites, earning an Air Force Cross for their bravery. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the community's appreciation for veterans and the sacrifices they made. Events like this strengthen the bond between service members and their local communities, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who served.
