NCW Libraries and Write On The River have commenced their 14th annual High School Writers Competition, welcoming submissions from students in grades 9-12 across five counties in North Central Washington. This year, participants from Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, and Ferry counties can compete for a total of $200 in cash prizes awarded for excellence in original short fiction. To qualify, submissions must be original works, unpublished, and range from 500 to 2,000 words, with a strict prohibition against artificial intelligence assistance. Each student is allowed one entry per year, and there is no entry fee, making this opportunity accessible to all aspiring young writers. The submission deadline is April 11, encouraging prompt participation.

This competition, established by New York Times bestselling author Chelsea Cain, aims to foster a supportive writing community and provide educational resources in fiction and publishing. NCW Libraries plays a vital role in connecting residents with resources that promote individual growth and community development.
