Chelan County to conduct permitted burn at its Leavenworth brush drop-off site

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Chelan County Public Works is preparing to conduct a permitted burn at its brush drop-off site in Leavenworth, with the necessary approval from the Washington State Department of Ecology. This burn will involve green waste collected from residents living in the Apple Maggot Quarantine Area. Crews are carefully monitoring weather conditions, including any air stagnation warnings, to determine the optimal time for the burn, which they hope to schedule during the week of April 15. A public service announcement will be released 24 hours prior to ignition, ensuring that the community is well-informed through local media and social media channels. This marks the second attempt to dispose of the material, as the initial plan was postponed last October due to unsuitable weather conditions.

The Leavenworth brush drop-off site has been operational since 2017, serving residents and businesses affected by the quarantine. Local properties, the City of Leavenworth, and the fire district have been notified about the upcoming burn to maintain community safety. State law prohibits the movement of brush from quarantine areas, making this burn a necessary measure for local waste management.
