Free shredded wood chips available for use within the Apple Maggot Quarantine Area of Chelan County

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Chelan County Public Works Department is providing an opportunity for residents within the Apple Maggot Quarantine Area to obtain free shredded wood chips at the Leavenworth brush drop-off site. This initiative aims to utilize brush dropped off by local residents, transforming it into a resource beneficial for moisture retention and ground cover in gardens and yards. The Apple Maggot Quarantine Area encompasses much of western Chelan County, including Leavenworth, Plain, and Lake Wenatchee, and the wood chips must remain within this zone. Residents are encouraged to bring shovels, gloves, and trailers to facilitate loading, as they will need to handle the material themselves. However, assistance will be available on specific days for larger vehicles, ensuring accessibility for all.

The chips, varying in size from 3 to 7 inches, can also be used in composting. For those who reside outside the quarantine area, free shredded wood chips are accessible at the Dryden Transfer Station, reinforcing the county's commitment to providing resources. This program not only supports local gardening needs but also addresses pest management in the region.
