Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Chelan County Moderate Risk Waste Facility (MRWF) has made a significant impact by collecting over 26 tons of household hazardous waste since the start of the year, averaging 81. 4 pounds per household. This figure surpasses initial expectations, underscoring the facility's necessity in Chelan County. Solid waste manager Brenda Blanchfield notes that the facility not only helps remove hazardous materials from homes but also prevents potential contamination of local water sources. Opened in December 2019, the MRWF operates year-round, providing a drop-off location for various hazardous items like used oil and paint thinners.

Monthly data shows approximately 100 visitors, predominantly from Wenatchee and surrounding unincorporated areas. The facility has also emphasized recycling, with 40% of collected materials being recycled or used as energy resources. Commissioner Bob Bugert expresses satisfaction with the community's engagement, highlighting the facility as a solid investment for future generations. The MRWF is open three days a week, making it accessible for residents to safely dispose of hazardous waste.
