PRESS RELEASE The City of Leavenworth is Working with Local and State Partners to Become BearWise

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The City of Leavenworth is taking significant steps to become a BearWise® community, collaborating with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Waste Management. This initiative focuses on preventing black bears from becoming accustomed to human food sources, which can lead to negative interactions. Leavenworth's location in prime black bear habitat makes it essential for residents to understand their role in minimizing bear attractants. A pilot program rolled out bear-resistant garbage cans in areas with high bear conflict, showing a commitment to community safety. Local officials, including City Administrator Matthew Selby, emphasize that solving bear-related issues requires ongoing partnerships and community involvement.

BearWise® offers practical tips for residents to secure food and garbage, thereby reducing the likelihood of bear encounters. The goal is to ensure the safety of both the community and the bears, allowing them to thrive in their natural environment. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to wildlife conservation and community education.
