Press Release Headed mushroom picking? Know the weather forecast and have an escape route in mind

Leavenworth, WALocal News

As the mushroom picking season approaches, Chelan County officials are reminding hunters of the dangers associated with exploring areas affected by the Cougar Creek Fire. This wildfire, one of the largest in Washington, has left the landscape vulnerable to dangerous debris flows when rains occur. Sergeant Kent Sisson from the Chelan County Department of Emergency Management highlights that rainfall on recently burned ground can trigger rapid flows of debris, posing significant risks to those in the vicinity. With many visitors unaware of the limited cell phone service in the Entiat Valley, it is critical for them to have a pre-planned escape route. The National Weather Service notes that debris flows can travel at speeds of up to 60 miles an hour on steep slopes, making quick action necessary.

In light of the approaching thunderstorm season, officials stress the importance of staying updated on weather forecasts. Mushroom hunters are advised to take precautions to ensure their safety while enjoying this popular outdoor activity. By being informed and prepared, individuals can enjoy the season responsibly.
