Press Release Winter Special Use Permits City of Leavenworth

Leavenworth, WALocal News

On November 12, 2020, the City of Leavenworth announced the introduction of Winter Special Use Permits (WSUP) aimed at supporting local businesses during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Following the early closure of Front Street, many businesses successfully created outdoor patio areas to maintain revenue during the summer months. The new WSUP program allows merchants on Front Street and 8th to apply for permits, expanding eligibility beyond those who received summer permits. Key features of the WSUP include requirements for nightly removal of outdoor furnishings and specific restrictions against tents and other temporary shelters. Mayor Florea highlighted the collaborative efforts with local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce that led to this initiative, which aims to sustain business operations while ensuring public safety.

The WSUP framework is designed to facilitate a thriving winter business environment while adhering to safety guidelines. The City has committed to strict enforcement of these permits, with violations resulting in fines and potential permit revocation. This proactive approach reflects the City’s commitment to fostering a safe and vibrant community amidst challenging circumstances.
