PRESS RELEASE City of Leavenworth Declares State of Emergency

Leavenworth, WALocal News

In response to an extraordinary winter weather event, the City of Leavenworth has declared a state of emergency, marking a critical step in managing the aftermath of record-breaking snowfall. On January 6, 2022, the city experienced 36 inches of snow in a single day, with certain microclimate areas receiving up to 48 inches within a 48-hour timeframe. This severe weather poses significant risks to life safety and structural integrity in the community. Mayor Carl Florea's emergency declaration allows for the swift deployment of local resources without the typical bidding process, expediting the city's response efforts. Furthermore, this declaration is essential for the city to qualify for state and federal emergency aid funding.

Public Works Director Tom Wachholder has been authorized to seek support from the National Guard to assist with critical operations, including citizen welfare checks and snow removal. Local contractors are also being engaged to provide immediate emergency aid, ensuring that the community's needs are met during this challenging time. The city emphasizes the importance of these actions to maintain public safety and facilitate recovery from this unprecedented snowfall event.
