Leavenworth moves forward with water system upgrades, stormwater waste improvements

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Leavenworth City Council has taken significant steps towards improving local infrastructure during its Feb. 11 meeting, approving a $6. 26 million loan for the Icicle Road Transmission Main Replacement project. This initiative aims to replace approximately 5,400 feet of outdated water main, enhancing the city's water distribution capabilities as construction is set to commence this spring. In addition, the council entered a partnership with the City of Wenatchee to utilize the Wenatchee Valley Regional Decant Facility, which will provide a solution for stormwater waste disposal collected from city catch basins.

Public Works Director Andi Zontek-Backstrum emphasized the necessity of this agreement, as the city has struggled to find proper disposal methods, impacting street maintenance efforts. The meeting also included discussions on proposed changes to manufactured home codes, aimed at reducing regulatory barriers and allowing tiny homes in residential zones, reflecting a growing need for diverse housing solutions. Councilmember Mike Bedard expressed support for these changes, highlighting the importance of accommodating different housing desires. The council's decisions will be revisited in a future meeting scheduled for Feb. 25.

These developments mark a proactive approach to infrastructure and housing challenges in Leavenworth.
