Cascade School District adopts changes to AI policy
On Oct. 29, the Cascade School District Board updated its electronics policy to address the challenges presented by artificial intelligence. The new policy outlines students' obligations for responsible AI use, including understanding AI limitations and ensuring data privacy. Superintendent Tracey Edou initiated the changes after receiving community feedback regarding the district's AI strategy. Board member Mike Worden commended the initiative, noting the importance of proactive measures in educational policy.
The updated policy reflects broader regional efforts, with districts like Quincy and Cashmere also working on similar guidelines. Edou praised Quincy’s leadership in AI policy development, indicating that their approach informed the Cascade updates. Furthermore, CSD teachers are beginning AI training, with a recent session facilitated by the University of Washington on a platform for educators. These developments aim to equip both students and teachers with the knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of AI in educational settings.
