Cascade School District considers changes to AI policy

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Cascade School District Board is reviewing its AI policy to address the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence technology. Superintendent Tracey Edou proposed updates designed to clarify student behavioral expectations regarding AI usage. The current policy defines AI's role as supportive but prohibits cheating and misinformation. Under the proposed changes, students would need to understand AI's limitations and consider potential biases. Edou noted that the proposal drew inspiration from the Quincy School District's progressive approach to AI.

Board Member Mike Worden supported the specifics regarding do's and don'ts as a valuable foundation. Similar discussions are occurring in Washington school districts, with Cashmere and Wenatchee also developing AI policies. The proposal will return for further discussion and possible approval at a future school board meeting.
