Chumstick Grange turns 100, looks to grow youth programs and membership
Chumstick Grange #819 celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 8, reflecting on its agricultural roots and community advocacy in the Leavenworth area. Founded in 1925, the Grange plays a vital role in providing leadership, educational programs, and community service opportunities. Local leader Paul Gray emphasized the importance of community connections among granges, which were established within a day’s travel of each other. However, the organization faces challenges in member engagement, with only 11 of its 43 members actively participating. The passing of a prominent leader in 2020 has left a void, prompting the Grange to seek new ways to revitalize its mission and preserve its historic building.
Youth programming is expanding, offering leadership and life skills training similar to 4-H and FFA, but more inclusive. This initiative aims to attract younger members and create a more vibrant community. Those interested can reach out via email for membership inquiries.
