Blewett Pass reopens after brief closure due to heavy snowfall

Leavenworth, WALocal News

US-97 over Blewett Pass reopened Monday morning after a brief closure caused by heavy snowfall, which resulted in disabled semis and collisions. The Washington State Department of Transportation confirmed the closure at 6:30 a. m. , with the pass reopening by 10 a. m.

The National Weather Service anticipated eight to 12 inches of snow in the area, designating it as one of the hardest hit passes in the region. This closure follows a recent reopening on October 7, after the pass was closed for over two weeks due to the neighboring Labor Mountain Fire. Officials are monitoring the situation closely as additional snowfall is forecasted throughout the day. Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and check for updates before traveling. The recurrent closures emphasize the challenges posed by extreme weather in the Cascades.

Local authorities continue to work on improving road safety and access during winter months.
